Spring may have just sprung

There can be nothing nicer than witnessing the first signs of spring in the UK. Snowdrops (Galanthus), native to Europe and introduced into Britain by the Romans, are in full flower in Southern England despite the cold snap of a couple of weeks ago. The energy and resilience of a flowering bulb is captured as they push through the cold and wet soil to burst into flower for a few days after which they wither and disappear for another year. The Snowdrops are followed closely by Crocus, early flowering Narcissi and Muscari and the spring bulb spectacle lasts until mid-May with the flowering of Darwin and Parrot Tulips, and Bluebells. One of the best places to witness flowering bulbs in their millions is at Kew where regular ‘bulbwatch’ updates are available on their web site advising when bulbs are in flower http://www.kew.org/visit-kew-gardens/BulbWatch/ Below are some of Cemal’s pictures taken at Kew and Wisley from previous years.
